Dozens of the metro’s maintenance workers and drivers’ assistants protested at the Shohadaa (Martyrs) Stop, demanding fixed contracts as promised under a directive from Prime Minister Kamal al-Ganzouri.
Protesters erected tents on the platform and said they will stage an open-ended sit-in until their demands are met. They added that work would not be halted, as the sit-in will be manned by whoever is not on shift.
“The sit-in aims at getting our rights, especially because Egypt has been witnessing a new era since the 25 January revolution,” Ahmed al-Sayed Saeed, one of the protesters, said.
He said that they had also taken legal measures and sent a statement with their demands to President Mohamed Morsy.
