London–Muslim Brotherhood spokesman in Europe Kamal el-Hilbawi has called on the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) to abandon some of its current positions, such as denying women and Copts the right to run for presidency. He also called on Brotherhood leaders over 65 years of age to step down from their positions and devote themselves to the process of change and reform.
El-Hiblawi’s comments came this weekend during an Islamic conference in London called “The Future of Islamic Ummah: Hopes and Impediments.”
The MB spokesman also blasted opposition groups in Egypt, saying many of them are motivated by personal aims and do not put the country’s interests at the top of their priorities.
He went on to note that some opposition movements have joined the ruling regime in working to alienate Islamic movements. He called on Egypt’s opposition to rally behind Mohamed ElBaradei, ex-chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency and a potential nominee to Egypt’s presidency, whom he praised for having a good reputation and an ability to bring about change.
