Maya Morsy elected head of women’s council

Several members of the National Council for Women have declared Maya Morsy as winner of head of the council, succeeding Mervat al-Tellawy.
 
This came during a procedural session on Monday at the council headquarters. The session was headed by Prime Minister Sherif Ismail and Tellawy.
 
Thirty appointed members took part in electing a chief from among council members.
 
Morsy is the head of the regional working team in the field of women empowerment policies and the regional coordinator of the United Nations Development Programme. She holds a master's degree in public administration and another master's degree in business administration from the United States. She obtained her bachelor's degree in political science from the American University in Cairo.
 
She is an expert in different fields, including international treaties, human rights and women's empowerment.
 
She succeeds Tellawy, who is has been heading the council since February 2012.
