Maspero calm after protesters clash with citizens

Protesters have calmed tensions after clashes between demonstrators staging a sit-in outside the state TV building in Cairo's Maspero and citizens objecting to the protest on Sunday.

Stone-throwing erupted earlier in the day between protesters demanding the purging of state media and residents of the nearby Boulaq Abul Ela district, who believe sit-ins negatively affect their daily routine.

Eyewitnesses said a group of civilians approached the protesters' tents and asked people to leave, before rock-throwing started.

Some protesters were injured in the clashes and were taken away in ambulances.

Protesters were divided over whether to proceed with the sit-in, some saying that it became unsafe.

Tasneem Yousry, a protester, told Egypt Independent that the sit-in should end and protesters should return to the safer Tahrir Square. She said that Boulaq Abul Ela had been the source of several previous attacks against protesters, and that army forces being stationed outside the TV building makes the area less secure.

Dozens of protesters at Tahrir Square had headed to Maspero to support their  fellow demonstrators.

Maspero and Tahrir have seen protests and sit-ins against the rule of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces over the past few days, coinciding with the first anniversary of the 25 January 2011 revolution which ousted former President Hosni Mubarak.
