Masked gunmen on Sunday fired at a military checkpoint on the Suez – Ismailia highway. No casualties were reported, and the gunmen managed to escape.
A military source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the incident occurred close to Amr village in the Al-Ganayen district of Suez.
He added that the armed forces hit a tire of the car used by the gunmen in the attack, which prompted the latter to abandon the vehicle and run away.
Initial investigations revealed that the car was stolen.
A security source said the police were combing the area to find the attackers.
There has been heavy security presence in Ganayen after the area’s police station was stormed and burned last week, following a civilian's death during a police chase, an incident which angered hundreds of protesters who accused the police of murder.
