Mansoura MP Walaa al-Husseini reportedly attacked parliamentary rival Hakem al-Sherbeeni and a number of the latter's supporters on Saturday, resulting in one death and five injuries.
Local security chief Mohamed Tolba said he had received reports from residents that al-Husseini, along with a number of partisans, had staged an armed assault on supporters al-Sherbeeni. Al-Sherbeeni had recently nominated himself to run in upcoming parliamentary elections in al-Husseini's electoral district.
The attack led to the death of Mohamed Mohamed Ibrahim, 21, who reportedly drowned in the Nile. Five others were injured, including a brother of al-Sherbeeni.
Security forces arrived at the village of Al-Badala, the site of the incident, where they arrested eight people on charges of weapons possession, including five of the MP's supporters.
According to eyewitness Gameel Gamal Ibrahim, six cars, driven by al-Husseini supporters, had suddenly appeared at village's main square. In a panic, some local residents threw themselves in the Nile in an effort to escape possible violence.
Past elections in Egypt have been accompanied by bouts of occasional violence. In 2005 parliamentary contests, at least 13 people died in clashes across the country on the day of the vote.
