One police officer was killed and 29 others were injured in an attack on a Mansoura police station in Daqahlia early Wednesday, according to security and Health Ministry officials.
Daqahlia security chief Samy al-Mihy said an unknown individual threw a bomb at the entry window outside the police station early Wednesday. He added that the area had been cordoned off and security measures had been tightened.
Abdel Wahab Suleiman, director of the Health Ministry department in Daqahlia, said one conscript died of his injuries, and that it was difficult to identify him due to the severity of the burns he had sustained.
A statement by the Interior Ministry revealed that the attack had caused severe damage to the police department and to police vehicles parked outside.
A security source, citing an initial forensic investigation, told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the blast was caused by a high-end timer bomb.
Medical sources said 22 of the injured had been discharged from the hospital.
Violence has surged in several Egyptian governorates, stoked by popular division over the removal of former President Mohamed Morsy from office by the army earlier this month.
Police and army forces have been targeted in attacks, especially in the Sinai Peninsula.
