South Giza prosecutors on Thursday referred Osama Mohamed Othman, manager of the Mecca Orphanage NGO, to Talbeya Court of Misdemeanors on charges of physical torture of a number of orphaned children, which Al-Masry Al-Youm had exclusively reported about on its website on Wednesday.
The prosecutors took the testimony of Othman’s wife, who was released on LE5,000 bail and requested forensic reports and the recordings of the surveillance cameras.
The video that was posted by the defendant’s wife triggered angry reactions among Internet users, as Social Solidarity Minister Ghada Waly accused her of being late in reporting the torture incident in order to use it as leverage to settle personal differences with her husband.
