Shubra al-Kheima Court has extended the detention of rights activist and lawyer Malek Adly, along with three other suspects, for a further 15 days pending investigations into charges over anti-government protests and subversive activities.
The four suspects are scheduled to be referred once again to prosecution on June 1.
Adly faces a wide range of charges, including calling for and attempting to overthrow the state Constitution and its republican regime; joining an organization that aims to override the law and state institutions and harm national unity and public peace; inciting demonstrations and circulating rumors that threaten public peace.
Adly denied all charges levelled against him and said during questioning that the security services arrested him "while not possessing any evidence.”
He added that he did not know anything about the charges prior to his arrest and that he was shocked when he discovered the police were observing him.
Adly was arrested in the Maadi neighborhood of Cairo on an arrest warrant from the public prosecutor in the wake of attempted large-scale anti-government protests on April 25.
It was the Shubra al-Khaima prosecution that also issued warrants for detained journalists Amr Badr and Mahmoud al-Sakka, who were arrested earlier this month at the Journalists Syndicate headquarters in Cairo.
Tight security measures were taken by the court during the hearing and the transfer of the defendents from where they are being detained.
