Attorney General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud on Wednesday referred Ali Eweis, operator of the Maadi boat that capsized on Thursday killing nine girls, to the Maadi Misdemeanors Court.
A report by a committee on river navigation has reportedly proven the suspect’s guilt. Eweis is expected to face trial on Saturday.
The boat operator stands accused of the involuntary manslaughter of nine girls–seven of whose bodies have been recovered–along with the injury of four others. He also faces charges of operating an unlicensed vessel and filling it with passengers beyond capacity.
The committee’s report, which comes as part of a formal investigation into the incident by prosecutors, states that the boat driver had violated navigation regulations when he docked in an area other than the formal anchorage. What’s more, the boat did not contain any life jackets, the committee found.
The bodies of Demyana Attiya, 8, and Rosefine Refaat, 13, could not be located by rescue teams. Search efforts, which began last Friday, continued on Wednesday night.
