The prosecution in the Battle of the Camel case has called for pro-Muslim Brotherhood preacher Safwat Hegazy to be charged with inciting violence against protesters on 2 and 3 February in Tahrir Square, in addition to the list of 24 former National Democratic Party members and businessmen who are now being tried on these charges.
On Thursday lawyers for the prosecution also requested that intelligence chief Major General Mourad Mowafy be brought before the court to testify in the case.
The prosecution has argued that the defendants conspired to intimidate and harm protesters in Tahrir Square during the 25 January revolution. Lawyers alleged that the defendants hired thugs to commit violent crimes against the protesters and arranged for their transportation to the square, in addition to mobilizing police forces against the demonstrators.
The prosecution has also called for bringing charges against the Freedom and Justice Party’s Mohamed al-Beltagy, the FJP’s assistant secretary general, Osama Yassin, and Muslim Brotherhood leader Gamal Abdel Hady.
Trial proceedings have now been adjourned to 8 September, when the defendants will argue their case.
