Lawyers seek no-confidence vote against syndicate head

A number of lawyers have launched a campaign to hold a vote of no confidence against Lawyers Syndicate head Sameh Ashour.

Syndicate member Ibrahim Fekry announced Monday that he and other lawyers intended to collect signatures from different governorates in Cairo against Ashour, who dismissed the calls, saying they do not deserve a response.

Fekry said in a briefing Tuesday he met with other lawyers to plan the campaign against Ashour.

“The main reason for this action is his stance on the supplement to the Constitutional Declaration recently issued by the military council, including rumors that he helped write it,” Fekry explained.

Fekry added that Ashour does not care about the economic and social conditions of lawyers, pointing out that as head of the syndicate board he has sought to raise membership fees.

“I will not be intimidated by these blackmailing actions that aim to defame me. My stance regarding the constitution is that it should be drafted by a Constituent Assembly, not controlled by the Freedom and Justice Party or any other party,” Ashour said.

Ashour, who heads the military junta’s Advisory Council, won the Lawyers Syndicate election last November after he defeated Mohamed Kamel of the Wafd Party, who was backed by the Muslim Brotherhood.
