Large fire destroys 11 stores north of Cairo

A huge fire burnt 11 stores in the Shubra al-Kheima district of Qalyubiya on Wednesday. The stores, located east of the railway, are owned by the governorate and rented by citizens from the local municipality.

Preliminary investigations attributed the fire to an electric short circuit, which led to an explosion in the electricity room behind one of the stores.

The civil protection department controlled the flames before they reached homes. Losses were estimated at approximately LE1 million. No victims were reported.

A police report was filed, and prosecution conducted investigations.

Major General Hassan Nagy, head of the district of Shubra al-Kheima, said the stores, which sell clothes, fruit and shoes are in temporary complex gathering street vendors in one place to avoid hindering traffic.

He added that he had instructed to move the stores and that they will be moved to another place.
