The Kuwaiti ambassador to Egypt, Rasheed al-Hammad, donated LE200,000 for the families of the Port Said violence victims, who died in clashes in February after a football game between the Ahly and Masry clubs.
Hammad visited Ahly club on Wednesday and held a session with Hassan Hamdy, the club’s chairman. The ambassador offered condolences over the deaths.
Mohamed al-Hammad, the Kuwaiti Embassy’s political adviser, and Alaa Hamada, embassy secretary, accompanied the ambassador on his visit.
Ahly is very popular in Kuwait with its local, African and Arab championships, the ambassador said, according to statements made by the club.
Kuwait decided to cancel a ceremony to celebrate its national holiday that was to take place in Egypt this year, he said, adding that ceremony costs were instead donated to the victims’ families.
The violence in Port Said left 74 football fans dead and 1,000 people injured. Masry fans flooded the pitch after the match and attacked the visiting Ahly fans, though many blamed the deaths on security forces’ negligence.
FIFA previously announced a donation of US$250,000 to the families of the victims, while the Confederation of African Football said it will give US$150,000 to the families.
