The summer fantasy: stretched out on a soft-sanded beach with just the right breeze… All that’s missing? The perfect summer drink with a good helping of ice, and you’re set for a lovely afternoon in the sun.
With a limited cocktail list at most bars in Egypt, it’s time to arm yourself with the necessary steps to make your own.
Over the next three weeks we are going to introduce you to new cocktail recipes with refreshing summer ideas you won’t find in regular bars around the city.
The Mojito is originally a Cuban cocktail that over time has become an international favorite–it even has a bar atop the Cairo Nile Hotel named in its honor. In this twist on the summer drink the refreshing mint and lemon taste is accentuated with watermelon-flavored ice cubes.
How to create the watermelon-flavored ice cubes:
Take one big watermelon and chop into 6 pieces. Take out the seeds, then puree the fruit in a blender with 1/4 cup of lime juice and 2 cups of ice water. You can add up to 1/2 cup of superfine sugar and 1/2 cup of allspice as well, depending on your taste. Blend for about a minute, until well-blended. Pour the mixture into an ice-cube tray and freeze the ice cubes along with the Mojito glasses for 3-4 hours.
How to make a watermelon Mojito:
A Mojito is traditionally made from five ingredients: spearmint, rum, sugar syrup, lime, and carbonated water. Be sure to have a good blender or martini shaker for mixing the drink.
Success in creating this drink depends solely on the blending of the lime and mint flavors.
Start by cutting the limes into quarters and picking the mint leaves off the stems. Place a generous pinch of mint and three or four lime wedges into the bottom of a martini shaker. Put plenty of effort into shaking the mixture to extract the lime’s essential oils. Now add the watermelon ice cubes to the mix. Add two or three tablespoons of the sugar syrup and about two ounces of the rum. Stir the mixture until fully blended and pour into a tall glass. Then fill the remaining of the chilled Mojito glass with soda water.
Garnish with a lemon slice or a mint sprig, and enjoy!
