Head of Cairo Criminal Court Mostafa al-Komy decided Monday to continue the detainment of Gamal Eddin Abdel Aziz, the secretary of former President Hosni Mubarak, for another 45 days pending investigations into charges of graft and abuse of power.
Auditing authorities and the Public Funds Prosecution said Abdel Aziz and his family members have a wealth estimated at LE11 billion in liquid assets and movable funds, stocks and bonds, and companies. Authorities also said the family owned land and buildings in Heliopolis, Sharm el-Sheikh, Agamy, 6th of October City and Hurghada, in addition to being partner in a company dedicated to importing wheat.
According to investigations, Abdel Aziz used his wife Magda Abdel Fattah as a cover for his business activities.
He pushed her into being a partner with Ali Abdel Fadil, owner of Venus International Company, which has won most of the tenders made by the General Authority for Supplying Commodities by a direct order from the secretary of the former president.
It has imported 182,000 tons of wheat, equal to LE670 million, over five years, despite large stores of wheat stocks in government storage.
The Illicit Gains Authority issued a decree to seize the money of Abdel Aziz and that of his wife and children, and to prevent them from disposing of their movable and liquid assets.
