Judge forced to retire over national security office sabotage

Egypt’s judges disciplinary council referred on Monday Judge Zakariya Abdel Aziz, a former chairman of the Judges' Club, to retirement over his alleged involvement in assaults on a security facility following the 2011 uprising.

Investigations by the council, based on photos and video clips, had found Abdel Aziz guilty of partaking in mob raids at the dissolved State Security Investigation Service’s headquarter in Nasr City in March 2011, nearly two months after the outbreak of the popular uprising that toppled former President Hosni Mubarak and was triggered by anti-police sentiments.

Abdel Aziz was celebrated by democracy advocates as one of the figures who struggled for judicial independence under Mubarak.
