The Journalists Syndicate's board has severely criticized police assaults on journalists, photographers and other members of the media covering the clashes in downtown Cairo on Saturday.
In a statement, the syndicate's board emphasized journalists' right to cover incidents without being assaulted.
The statement called on the authorities to facilitate the media's work. It also expressed solidarity with those who were injured and detained, calling on security forces to immediately release them.
The board referred to its right to sue whoever has participated in or given orders to assault journalists.
As of Saturday night, the clashes had left two dead and more than 760 injured. They have continued throughout Sunday.
