Journalists protest in solidarity with state-run newspaper editor

Dozens of journalists protested outside the Journalists Syndicate on Thursday, calling for this week’s court ruling to reinstate Al-Gomhurriya chief editor Gamal Abdel Rahim to be implemented.

On Tuesday the State Council Administrative Court canceled the Shura Council’s decision to dismiss Abdel Rahim, and ordered his reinstatement at the state-run paper.

Shura Council Speaker Ahmed Fahmy suspended Abdel Rahim on 17 October after the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces objected to a story Al-Gomhurriya ran the same day reporting that former SCAF chairman Hussein Tantawi and his deputy Sami Anan were expected to be banned from travel due to corruption investigations.

Abdel Rahim held a press conference on Wednesday at the Al-Gomhurriya office and announced that the Shura Council had not yet implemented the court ruling to reinstate him. He added that he will fight to restore his right.

In a statement on Thursday, the Lawyers Syndicate's freedom committee voiced support for Abdel Rahim and expressed disappointment that such an incident had taken place after the revolution.
