Journalists to protest against syndicate’s law

Several journalists will stage a protest on Wednesday outside the Journalists' Syndicate to voice their demands on amending articles in the syndicate’s law, which they described as ‘outdated’, as well as express solidarity with their detained colleagues.

The journalists called on both member and non-member syndicate journalists to join the protest, scheduled to take place at 5 pm.

In a statement, the journalists said, “In light of the security crackdown on whoever works in journalism or media, and due to the recent incidents of suppression and intimidation of journalists and newspapers, some state institutions started to use some of the articles of the syndicate law, especially article no.76 for the year 1970 which considers whoever works in journalism without being registered in the syndicate to be ‘impersonating a journalist’. The article states no more than a year in prison and, or, a fine of no more than LE300.”
