Scores of journalists staged a protest in front of their syndicate building in downtown Cairo, in a continuation of Tuesday's wide-scale protests organized by opposition groups.
Security forces detained Yahya Qallash, a former syndicate member who was taking part in the demonstration. His arrest ignited friction between policemen and demonstrators. Scores of citizens joined the protest.
The journalists left the syndicate and headed into the street, calling for the release of their detained colleague. Security officers yielded and set Qallash free after 15 minutes.
Lawyers, meanwhile, decided to follow suit and staged another protest in front of their syndicate at Ramses Street, chanting “bread…..freedom….social equality,” one of the slogans that Tuesday protesters used.
