Jordanian paper: MB plans to assassinate Morsi

The Jordanian newspaper Al-Arab al-Yawm has quoted an Egyptian security source as saying that authorities have detected a scheme by the Muslim Brotherhood to assassinate toppled President Mohamed Morsi in prison, in order to spark an Islamist revolution that will overthrow the current regime.

Security authorities are keen to make Morsi's tranfer to court sessions confidential for that reason, the source added.

The scheme was reportedly approved by deputy supreme guide of the Muslim Brotherhood Khairat al-Shater and acting supreme guide Mahmoud Ezzat.

Tight security measures have thwarted previous attempts to assassinate Morsi, which include targetting the plane taking him to court with an "RPG" or poisoning his food in prison, according to the security source.

Former Assistant Interior Minister Major General Mohamed Nour Eddin told Al-Arab Al-Yawm that the Muslim Brotherhood has been planning to murder Morsi for some time as he possesses dangerous information, such as who has spied on other parties. If charges were laid for those actions, group leaders could be sent to jail and even sentenced to death.

Al-Arab al-Yawm quoted sources close to Morsi's family as saying that the former president sent a letter to his family expressing fear of an assassination attempt by the group.

Former Brotherhood member Mahmoud al-Wardany, meanwhile, said Morsi's family refuses to disclose the letter, as they believe the security forces, and not Morsi, wrote it.
