Egypt Independent, the English-language sister news organization of Al-Masry Al-Youm, is hiring staff to work on our website and weekly print newspaper. We are looking for people who share our passion and dedication at this revolutionary juncture in Egypt’s history and are excited to work with our dedicated team of talented editors, reporters and translators.
News Editor: The news editor’s job focuses on in-house articles written by a team of journalists and a handful of freelancers from Egypt, across the region and around the world. Familiarity with the country’s complex and dynamic political life is required. A working knowledge of written and spoken Arabic is very highly desired. Fluency in English is essential. A candidate for this position should have more than three years of experience in journalism, preferably print. Strong teamwork skills and a dedicated work ethic are essential. Responsibilities include managing production schedule, generating and assigning story ideas, fielding freelance pitches, reporting and writing stories, and, primarily, editing. This is a full-time position.

Copy Editor: Egypt Independent’s team of copy editors work in a fast-paced news environment polishing stories for our website, as well as publishing content, selecting artwork and working closely with translators, reporters and section editors. Applicants should have at least one year of previous journalism or news editing experience. The position requires a native or fluent command of written English, as well as a sharp eye for detail, strong news sense and knowledge of local and regional affairs. Knowledge of Arabic is a plus.

Proofreader: Proofreaders work on Egypt Independent’s weekly print edition. Applicants should have previous proofreading experience, preferably for a news publication, and a very careful eye for detail. A native or fluent command of written English is required. Journalism experience and/or familiarity with Adobe InDesign and print layout are preferred, but not required. Proofreaders must be available to work Tuesday and Wednesday every week.
