Israel begins constructions on new frontier barrier

Israel on Monday will begin construction on an electronic barrier along the Egyptian border in an effort to curb irregular immigration.

Officials have long delayed the commencement of building the barrier.

The Defense Ministry is spearheading the building process, according to Yediot Ahronot, an Israeli newspaper, which said the budget for this project is currently NIS1.35 billion (nearly US$37 million).

“The Defense Ministry will work towards shortening the timetables for completing the fence," the paper quoted Defense Ministry Director-General Ehud Shani in its coverage as saying.

The work is expected to take up to a year, the Israeli daily Jerusalem Post said.

The barrier is designed to support another fence, already in use but frequently penetrated by scores of African migrants.
