A senior Islamist political figure has accused fellow Islamists of buying votes with food in the recent elections.
“Some Islamist candidates won votes by distributing food in the first phase of the parliamentary elections,” said Essam Sultan, vice president of the Islamist Wasat Party. “They have thereby acted against God’s rules.”
Sultan called on the revolutionary youth not to be a part of the ruling elite.
“They just want freedom,” he said, referring to young revolutionaries.
He added that his party supports a civil state with a religious reference. “We need no support from any Muslim or Christian group for that,” he said.
“We do not speak on behalf of God,” he said. “Everybody has the right to agree or disagree with us.”
