Various Islamist parties have rejected the cabinet’s document on the constitutional principles that Deputy Prime Minister Ali al-Selmy previously announced.
Salafi parties staged protests in nine different cities on Tuesday, rejecting the principle of the civil state that is included in the document. “These protests are but a rehearsal for million-strong demonstrations that we’ll organize,” said Abdullah Abdel Gawad, a protester.
“We categorically reject the so-called supra constitutional principles,” said Mahmoud Fathy, representative of the founders of the Salafi al-Fadila Party. “A parliament elected by the people is the only competent authority to write the constitution.”
“This document means heresy,” said Mohsen Rady, leading figure of the Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party.
Earlier this week, Selmy said the document requires Egypt to be a civil and democratic state.
