A leading figure in the Egyptian Social Democratic Party said parties supportive of a civil state were surprised when Islamists went back on an agreement regarding the Constituent Assembly they made last week, according to state-run Al-Ahram newspaper's website.
Farid Zahran said that at a Sunday meeting at the Wafd Party headquarters, Islamists tried to impose new dictates on the process of choosing the committee that will write Egypt's new constitution.
He also said Jama'a al-Islamiya's Construction and Development Party went back on a previous agreement with the ruling military council to forfeit its 2 percent representation in the Constituent Assembly to civil forces.
The formation of the assembly is facing problems once again, despite an agreement between political forces and Egypt's military leaders that it would be divided equally between Islamists and supporters of a civil state.
