Islamic Jihad leader arrested upon arrival in Cairo

The Ministry of Interior arrested a leader from the Egyptian Islamic Jihad group when he arrived at Cairo International Airport on a flight from Yemen on Thursday, a security source told Al-Masry Al-Youm.

Rabie Abdallah Mohamed Ghoneimi, 43, was carrying a fake passport.

Ghoneimi was sentenced in absentia to five years in prison by a military court in 1999. More than 89 suspects, including the leader of Egyptian Islamic Jihad, were sentenced to prison or death that year. Sheikh Fadl, its founder, is currently serving life at Tora prison.

Ghoneimi is a suspect in case 381 reviewed by the Emergency Supreme State Security Court. He will be referred to the court to face the charges, which include using a forged passport to enter the country.

Several members of radical Islamic groups who went to Pakistan, Afghanistan and other countries are attempting to return to Egypt after the 25 January revolution.
