Irrigation Ministry amends draft law on water prices

Egypt's Irrigation Ministry has amended a new irrigation draft law after the ministries of agriculture, local development and trade objected to a clause in the proposed law stipulating that farmers pay LE0.25 per square meter of irrigation water.

The amendments will make investors responsible for meeting the costs of maintaining irrigation networks associated with their projects.

“The new amendments aim to reduce water consumption,“ said Irrigation Minister Mohamed Nasr Eddin Allam. “They also prohibit the disposal of water in canals.”
