Investment Minister to be replaced after World Bank nomination

The ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) has commissioned a panel of economic experts to prepare a list of potential nominees to replace Minister of Investment Mahmoud Mohie Eddin, sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm.

The minister was nominated two months ago to be an executive director of the World Bank Group.

Sources in the NDP said choosing an alternative will be difficult given that the ministry has only recently been established and requires a dynamic leader.

Mohie Eddin refused to be accompanied by reporters when he inaugurated two new ministry buildings yesterday. He kept his mobile phone switched off in a bid to avoid inquiries about his nomination, which Al-Masry Al-Youm revealed two days ago.

The sources, who refused to be named, said 47-year-old Mohie Eddin did not consult close acquaintances over the nomination, preferring to leave the final decision to President Hosni Mubarak–an approach they described as "politically shrewd.”
