Investigators given reports of LE1 bn corruption losses in govt

A panel of investigators formed based on a decision by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has received reports of corruption within government institutions that has cost the country LE1 billion, according to regulatory sources.

The panel was formed after statements last week by Hisham Geneina, head of the Central Auditing Organization, in which he put losses from government corruption between 2012 and 2015 at LE600 billion.

But the sources said that the number Geneina mentioned was “exaggerated”.

The squandering of public funds cost LE167 million at the Interior Ministry, LE89 at the Finance Ministry, LE21 million at the Investment Ministry, LE211 million at the Agriculture Ministry, LE218 million at the Transport Ministry, LE45 million at the Justice Ministry, LE76 million at the Housing Ministry and LE88 at the Water Resources and Irrigation Ministry, according to the sources.

They added that most of the detected incidents of corruption fell between 2013 and 2014, disclosing that an incumbent minister and a former one are being implicated for corruption.

Reports on cases with criminal suspicions are scheduled to be referred to the prosecution.
