The head of Egypt’s Ilicit Gains Authority (IGA) has complained of dodgy responses given by former president Hosni Mubarak and ex-officials during interrogations over their wealth.
IGA’s head, Khaled Selim, speaking to independent daily Al-Shorouk on Thursday, described interrogations with Mubarak and former regime figures as “highly difficult and exhausting.”
Mubarak, along with a number of former regime officials, has been in custody pending investigations over financial corruption, abuse of power, and involvement in murdering protesters during the recent 18-day unrest that resulted in the ouster of former President Hosni Mubarak.
Mubarak is awaiting a criminal trial in August over involvement murdering demonstrators.
“It’s as if they come from another planet, they do nothing better than prevaricate,” Selim said, speaking about Mubarak and his officials.
Selim said investigations with the ex-officials require patience and high concentration.
Many Egyptians believe that restoring all assets illegally obtained by former regime officials will be a difficult, time-consuming task, in contrast to making deals with officials to retrieve part of their wealth.
But Selim, the most senior official responsible for restoring the plundered assets, vowed he “will not surrender a single penny of the people’s money.”
