Interrogation of Mubarak’s former chief of staff begins

The Illicit Gains Authority began interrogating former Presidential Chief of Staff Zakareya Azmi on charges of corruption Thursday.

Former President Hosni Mubarak's officials face corruption and other charges for allegedly using their positions to enrich themselves and broker sweetheart deals.

Azmi reached the headquarters of the Illicit Gains Authority at 10 am on Thursday.

Assem al-Gohary, chairman of the authority, summoned Azmi after investigations confirmed that he and his wife, Bahia Abdel Moneim Suleiman, own real estate disproportionate to Azmi's legitimate sources of income.

Azmi said on 8 March that he is still responsible for the presidential offices, although he no longer holds the position of chief of staff.
