Interior Ministry: 73 Brotherhood supporters arrested across Egypt

Seventy-three demonstrators were arrested during protests by supporters of toppled president Mohamed Morsy on Friday, according to a statement by the Interior Ministry.

Security forces managed to disperse the protests, which organizers failed to obtain permission for based on a recently-approved protest law, the statement noted.

“Demonstrations by supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood at a number of governorates hindered traffic and caused clashes with other citizens. Security forces intervened immediately and managed to separate both sides”, read the statement.

Protesters in Cairo allegedly blocked traffic and clashed with citizens at Gesr al-Suweis and Helmiya Square before hurling Molotov cocktails at security, the ministry said. Nineteen were arrested when the protests were dispersed “in line with the law.” Similar occurrences took place in Talbiya, al-Haram Street, where eleven demonstrators were arrested, it said.

The statement added that 43 protesters were also apprehended in Alexandria, Beheira, Fayoum, Ismailia, Port Said, Minya and Monufiya.
