Interior Ministry: 7 security personnel, 4 terrorists killed in North Sinai attack

Egypt’s Interior Ministry said on Wednesday that six recruits, a police officer and four terrorists were killed in a terrorist attack at southwestern al-Arish in North Sinai.

A statement from the ministry said that a group of terrorists attacked an area for police outposts in southwestern Arish, with the forces confronting the attackers and killed four of them, with one of them killed from an explosive belt he was carrying. They found explosive belts, automatic weapons and hand grenade bombs in terrorists’ possession.

The Interior Ministry pointed out that the forces are hunting the terrorist group responsible for the attack on the security area.

Legal proceedings have been taken and the Supreme State Security Prosecution took over investigations in the case.

Since 2014, North Sinai has witnessed a growing number of terrorist attacks carried out in the Sinai Province, including various attacks on the army and the police.

This increase in terrorism followed the ouster of late President Mohamed Morsi. Morsi’s party was affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, which Egypt subsequently banned as a terrorist group.
