Armed forces and police units were deployed on Wednesday to areas surrounding Tahrir Square to secure it against potential attacks, after a night of violence in Cairo leaving 16 dead and others injured stoked tensions between pro and anti-government protesters.
State-owned news agency MENA reported that high security measures had been employed on Bab al-Louq, Tahrir Street, 6 October Bridge, the Corniche road from Qasr al-Aini Street, Simon Bolivar Square (near the US embassy) and all roads leading to Tahrir Square.
Protesters on the only platform inside the square called on others to stop shooting fireworks so people would not confuse the sound with weapon fire, which could terrify them, MENA added.
