Initial losses from Fayoum train accident LE9 million

Mostafa Qinawy, president of the Egyptian National Railways Authority, has said the initial losses from the Fayoum train accident were LE9 million.

Four passengers were killed and 40 others injured Saturday evening when two trains collided in central Fayoum.

The initial Transportation Ministry report said the cause of the accident was a malfunction of the semaphore system, though another report that was sent to Prime Minister Hesham Qandil said one of the drivers was driving too fast.

Investigations indicated that there is no direct means of communication between the watchtowers and the train drivers, as they communicate through a telephone operator who receives instructions from the towers and relays them to the drivers.
