Indian foreign minister to visit Egypt next week

Indian Foreign Minister S.M. Krishna will visit Egypt on 4 and 5 March to conduct senior-level talks to bolster bilateral relations, Egyptian Ambassador to India Khaled al-Baqly said Tuesday.

Baqly told state-run news agency MENA that Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr and his Indian counterpart will chair the sixth session of an Egyptian-Indian joint committee that has not convened for six years.

This will be Krishna's first visit to Egypt since the start of the 25 January revolution, which ousted ex-President Hosni Mubarak.

The two ministers are scheduled to attend the signing of several agreements and cooperation programs in the fields of agriculture, science, technology and environment.

Cooperation agreements in the fields of monument protection, libraries and universities are currently being finalized, Baqly said.

The total volume of trade between Egypt and India was estimated at US$3.2 billion in 2010, Baqly said, adding that both countries hope to maintain this high level.

Baqly said Indian investments in Egypt increased last year despite the unstable conditions in the country.
