Inclement weather shuts down ports and liner routes near Alexandria

Egyptian port officials on Sunday have decided to extend a halt in maritime movement along two straits near Alexandria due to rising water levels and violent winds. The measure aims to avert collisions between passing liners, one official said.

Saturday ushered in sandstorms throughout parts of Egypt. Egypt's northern coastal areas also witnessed intense rainfalls. The inclement weather is expected to persist until Monday.

The storms rendered visibility poor in Cairo on Saturday. Traffic issues were reported throughout the city.

Authorities on Saturday decided to shut down eight Red Sea and Mediterranean seaports due to the rising water levels.
