Imams demand independence of Al-Azhar

Hundreds of imams marched to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces on Sunday, calling for the independence of Al-Azhar and the election of its grand sheikh instead of his appointment by the government.

They want the institution to be financially and administratively independent from the state so as to retain its prominent status among Muslim nations.

They also want the Ministry of Religious Endowments and the Dar Al-Ifta [Religious Edicts Institute] to be affiliated with Al-Azhar.
