Illicit Gains Authority renews detention of Fathi Sorour

Illicit Gains Authority head Assem al-Gohary renewed on Wednesday the detention of former People's Assembly Speaker Fathi Sorour for an additional 15 days pending an investigation into his assets.

Sorour was transferred back to his cell in Tora prison, where he has been detained for the past 15 days. Investigations revealed that Sorour owned real estate in Cairo and other governorates that were not commensurate with his official income.

Sorour is also charged with inciting thugs to attack protesters on 2 February, when men wielding weapons and riding camels and horses stormed into Tahrir Square.

A report released Tuesday by the official fact-finding committee charged with investigating the events of the revolution revealed that a number of former officials were responsible for protesters' deaths.
