Ibrahim Youssef, member of the Zamalek Club board and former star of Egypt’s national football team, died on Thursday at the age of 54 after suffering a severe heart attack.
Attending his military funeral were leaders and officers of the Interior Ministry and the Police Sports Association, of which Youssef was a member, as well as his colleagues and relatives.
Youssef was one of the best defenders in the history of Egyptian football as a member of Zamalek Club and the national team.
He helped Egypt earn a bronze medal in the Nile Basin Tournament in 1983 and won the award for best Egyptian player several times. He was named best playmaker in the Africa Cup in 1984, and was ranked by France Football magazine as the second best player in Africa in 1984 and the third best in 1985.
With his beloved Zamalek Club, he won the Egyptian league championship in 1983, 1984, and 1988, the Egypt Cup in 1979 and 1988, the African Champions League in 1984 and 1986, and the Afro-Asian Cup in 1988.
