Hend Sabry resigns from post of Goodwill Ambassador at WFP

Actress Hend Sabry announced her resignation from her position as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations World Food Program (WFP), due to the program’s failure to lift the siege on the people of Gaza.

Through her Instagram account, she published the following statement: “After 13 years of humanitarian work around the world, I resign from the WFP. I write this with a heavy heart and deep sadness. I have decided to abandon my role as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations World Food Program, a role that I have been proud of and have been playing for years.”

Sabry continued: “Over the past weeks, I have witnessed and shared the experiences of my dedicated colleagues at WFP in feeling helpless because they were unable to carry out their duty to the fullest extent as they always do towards the children, mothers, fathers and grandparents in Gaza, and they could do little in the face of the crushing war machine that did not have mercy on civilians who are besieged by death.”

“I have tried to make my voice heard at the highest level of the WFP and to join my colleagues in demanding that the program’s weight be used as it has done successfully in the past, to call and push strongly for an immediate, humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, and to take advantage of the program’s influence to prevent the use of starvation as a weapon of war.”

“However, starvation and siege have been used as weapons of war over the past forty-six days against more than two million civilians in Gaza, a weapon that has so far killed more than 14,000 people, made more than 1.6 million people homeless, and destroyed half of buildings, hospitals and schools that were supposed to be safe shelters were bombed.”

She concluded, “For this reason, I announce my resignation and wish all my colleagues in the World Food Program safety and peace, while stressing that I will not give up my humanitarian and societal role, but I will do so in other and different forms.”
