Heikal summoned for questioning on Mubarak’s wealth

An Egyptian judicial authority on Wednesday summoned renowned journalist Mohamed Hassanein Heikal for questioning on the wealth of ousted President Hosni Mubarak.

During a recent interview with state-owned Al-Ahram newspaper concerning Mubarak’s wealth, Heikal said, "It amounts to nearly US$11 billion in the United States alone. There are two reports in this regard. The first is a report available at the World Bank, which corresponds with CIA reports, which concerns money found in America estimated at between US$9 billion and US$11 billion, and this in itself is an alarming number."

He went on to say that "in accordance with reports from the Federation of Swiss banks and the Swiss government, nine members of the Mubarak family have accounts in Swiss banks worth 512 million Swiss francs, and this figure became official during a visit of the Swiss delegation to Egypt."

At a news conference on Wednesday, Assem al-Gohary, the head of the Illicit Gains Authority, called on everyone with information on smuggled assets to provide documented proof regarding these assets.
