Heightened security measures on border scares Israeli residents

Several Israelis who live in communities close to the Egyptian border expressed concern over heightened security measures along the border.

Israelis told Israeli newspaper Maariv that warnings of terrorist attacks launched from Sinai are exaggerated.

The head of the regional council of Ramat Negev settlement Shmuel Rifman, meanwhile, called on the Israeli Army to liquidate an alleged Palestinian cell in Sinai. The paper also said that he speaks on a daily basis with “concerned citizens” to reassure them, and criticized Israeli security measures.

The paper cited Rifman as saying that security bodies are overreacting to the attacks in Eilat, which occurred in mid August and led to the death of eight Israelis. Israeli authorities have issued warnings without taking into consideration the damage that could result from spreading fear, he said.

He added that the heightened security has already led to economic losses. An electrical company, for instance, was scheduled to send workers to an area in the south but canceled the plan as a result of the security situation.
