Candidates using the slogan "Islam is the Solution" in the run-up to next month's parliamentary elections will be disqualified, High Elections Commission (HEC) head Abdel Aziz Omar declared this week.
“The use of this slogan violates the rules laid down by the commission,” Omar said.
A law governing political rights gives the commission the right to request that the Supreme Administrative Court disqualify candidates found violating commission rules pertaining to the use of religious slogans and symbols or who wage electoral campaigns promoting racial or religious discrimination.
The Administrative Judicial Court had earlier rejected an HEC request to disqualify a particular candidate who had used the same slogan in his campaign.
“Perhaps the documents presented to the court constituted insufficient proof of guilt,” said the ruling National Democratic Party’s Legal Affairs Secretary Mohamed al-Dakroury, commenting on the court ruling.
In coming days, the commission is expected to announce the names and number of judges mandated with supervising central and branch polling stations throughout the country.
