Heatwave to continue Monday, health warnings issued

The heatwave seen throughout the country the past few days is expected to continue into Monday, with meteorologist forecasting very high temperatures for most of the country, although temperatures will drop somewhat in the west and north coast.

The hottest temperatures will be in the south, with Luxor and Aswan expected to reach 46 degrees centigrade, and Qena touching 44.

Further north, Cairo is expected to be around 40 degrees centigrade, and Alexandria a relatively cool 31.

Officials issued health warnings on Sunday due to the high temperatures, saying people should avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and hard physical work at the hottest part of the day.

Meanwhile, the Cairo Metro Authority has enforced speed restrictions on its trains to avoid malfunctions due to the heat.

Meteoroglogists also predicted strong winds in the north, likely to whip up sand and dust inland and cause choppy waters along the north coast.

The Red Sea, however, will be relatively calm, accompanied by a north-westerly breeze.
