Health Ministry tightens foodstuff scrutiny before Ramadan

Egypt's Ministry of Health has tightened scrutiny over foodstuffs as part of preparating for Ramadan, the Islamic holy month.

In a statement on Sunday, the head of the ministry's environmental department, Yousry Hussein, said samples have been taken from the markets for analysis. He added that health standards are being tested at slaughterhouses and meat factories.

Hussein explained that the department will check health standards for the storage of foodstuffs at public markets, restaurants, hotels, and charity feasts.

Yousry stressed that the ministry is on alert to handle food poisoning, and that it will adopt all preemptive measures needed.

In Egypt, the month of Ramadan records the highest rate of food consumption.
