Health Ministry plan would hire locals as hospital guards

A new Health Ministry proposal would put young men across Cairo to work as guards at hospitals in their neighborhoods, a ministry official said Tuesday.

The proposal comes in the wake of attacks, break-ins and thefts at hospitals during the revolution.

The ministry would pay those hired to provide security, said Assistant Health Minister for Security Diaa Mashreqy, who toured several Cairo hospitals Tuesday accompanied by bodyguards.

Assistant Health Minister Abdel Hamid Abaza said the practice has already proven effective at Ahmed Maher hospital, which he claimed was the least targeted hospital in Egypt since men from Darb al-Ahmar and Batneyya were hired as guards.

The Health Ministry announced in August that it had asked experts to prepare a hospital security plan that includes guards.
