Health Ministry: 100 students infected with mumps since beginning of second semester

Amr Qandil, deputy health minister for preventive medicine, said on Sunday that total number of students infected with mumps has reached 100 cases since beginning of the second semester last week.

Qandil told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the ministry distributed 60,000 CDs to raise awareness among students and other officials at schools nationwide within the ministry’s plan to reduce the infection.

The ministry, according to Qandil, distributed 400,000 posters for the same purpose and sent medical teams from the preventive medicine sector to make sure of the presence of health insurance teams and that preventive methods are followed in schools like isolation of students in case infection of any symptoms of the disease appear.

The cost of the ministry’s plan, including the CDs and posters, has reached LE2 million, Qandil added.

Qandil advised the parents to keep their children at home in case of infection with influenza, mumps or any other diseases to prevent complications and help protection of others from infection.

The ministry, according to Qandil, recommended the Education Ministry of giving from one to two weeks off for students with mumps until they recover, as they need rest without medicine. He also highlighted importance of personal cleanliness, good ventilation, washing hands and covering the mouth while coughing or sneezing.

The second semester has been postponed for three times.
